Well now that I have my new laptop up and running I have started playing Counter Strike Source again.  The first thing I noticed was that I could no longer set my crosshair scale using cl_crosshairscale! This was very dissapointing but after a quick google search I was able to find some great info about it and how to restore the old crosshair scale system.  The info you need is below and at the end I have added a few screen shots showing the differences. Hope this info help some other out there with the same issue.

Big thanks to hisham.albeik for his following post in the Steam Users’ Forums.

Crosshairs now have customizable size, thickness, and color:

  • cl_crosshairsize specifies the size of the crosshair in pixels at 640×480 resolution
  • cl_crosshairthickness specifies the thickness of the crosshair in pixels at 640×480 resolution
  • The crosshair now scales proportionately for all screen resolutions. This replaces the old scaling behavior, and the cvar cl_crosshairscale is no longer used. Players can revert to old crosshair behavior by settingcl_legacy_crosshair_scale to 1.
  • Setting cl_crosshaircolor to 5 enables the use of custom crosshair colors, specified by cvars cl_crosshaircolor_r, cl_crosshaircolor_g, and cl_crosshaircolor_b.
  • The default of cl_crosshairuseapha has been changed to 1. Alpha blending makes the crosshair much more visible on new HDR maps, and it is recommended that existing players enable this setting manually or through the options interface (Multiplayer->Crosshair appearance->Translucent).
  • Cvar cl_legacy_crosshair has been renamed to cl_legacy_crosshair_recoil for consistency.

Since i’m running out of space on the faq, i’m linking the info regarding crosshair modification here. So to provide a full info on the crosshair change, I’m adding the recoil change that was introduced few updates ago.

  • Made crosshair scale independently of framerate, matching the old behavior at 100 fps. This does not affect actual recoil, fire rate, or spread – only the expansion of the crosshair. Added cl_legacy_crosshair, which defaults to the new behavior. Please read above regarding this change as the cvar cl_legacy_crosshair has been modified tocl_legacy_crosshair_recoil

So setting cl_legacy_crosshair_scale 1 will bring back your OLD BELOVED crosshair scale. (edit: so you can usecl_crosshairscale)

To change the colors using the custom colors cvars (RGB):

cl_crosshaircolor 5 <– allows you to customize colours.

cl_crosshaircolor_r 0
cl_crosshaircolor_g 0
cl_crosshaircolor_b 0

makes black

if you set them to 255 then its white.

And ofcourse no RGB stuff would be complete without:

There are two blend modes for the crosshair: alpha blending and additive blending.

When cl_crosshairusealpha is 0, the crosshair is additively blended. This is the mode used when the translucency option on the UI is not checked. Additive blending simply adds the color values for the crosshair on the the rendered pixels on the screen. The value for cl_crosshairalpha is ignored when additive blending is used. When additive blending, colors will always get lighter. If the crosshair is over a very brightly lit scene, it will be very difficult to see, if visible at all.

When cl_crosshairusealpha is 1, the crosshair is alpha blended. This is the mode used when the translucency option on the options UI is checked. In alpha blending the crosshair colors are mixed with the rendered pixels using the opacity value specified in cl_crosshairalpha. An alpha value of 0 is completely transparent, and a value of 255 is completely opaque. The default value of 200 is mostly opaque, allowing about 20% of the underlying pixel color to show through.

In other words; If you want black non translucent crosshairs, you need to use alpha blending. ie. cl_crosshairusealpha 1, then set the transparency to fully opaque; ie. cl_crosshairalpha 255.

This is some really great info but what does the new crosshair system look like compared to the previous one.  Here are a couple of screenshots that should help.

Crosshair size/scale:

cl_crosshairsize 2.0

cl_crosshairscale 2500

Crosshair alpha/color:

cl_crosshairalpha is 1, cl_crosshaircolor is 5, cl_rosshaircolor_(rgb) are all set to 0

cl_crosshairalpha is 0, cl_crosshaircolor is 5, cl_rosshaircolor_(rgb) are all set to 0

Lots of upgrades and changes are in the works for our site.  Theme updates, cms upgrades, and not to mention a server migration to a brand new server!  Woot!  The migration will happen on Monday, January 7, 2011 so there may be a little down time but I’ll try to make it brief.  The new server will be running CentOS 5 (currently on 4.8) and the newest versions of PHP and MySQL as well.  Thats it for now, keep watching for more updates.

We need MEMBERS! It is true…..our numbers are weak our lives our busy, and what does this lead to….weeks of inactivity. To help solve this issues we need to branch out folks.
I am calling on all of you to find active gamers that aren’t annoying douchebags that would like to join us.
Family, friends, ex-lovers you name it.
Find people you enjoy playing with and invite them to the clan.
If you know someone that you would like to invite simply have them send an e-mail to me at
[us.shadow.op@gmail.com] with their name, I will question them further once i receive their e-mail.

This is stage 1 in my plan to help with any incactivity issues we seem to have. Below i will highlight the basic steps of the plan.

Stage 1: recruit, recruit, recruit
Stage 2: Divide and specialize

For stage two I plan on specializing into seperate divisions based on game type and for the time being a division for consoles / That’s right we are branching to consoles!
From our members we will elect commanders that are in charge of various genres (FPS, RPG, RTS etc..).
These people will help keep activity high by setting up events, and being active on the website and forums and such.

Stage 3: ?????

Stage 4: Profit

(those last 2 were pop culture references)

Any how, I’ve given you your instructions and I’m hoping that we can actually expand, and remember ask whoever you want so long as they are not annoying and (or) asshats.
